Should You Repair or Replace Your Water Heater? How old is your water heater? If only 1-5 years old, it will probably be worth it to fix it. Most will still probably be under warranty, so it shouldn’t cost you much. Chaud Company technicians are factory trained and authorized to make that repair. However, if the entire system is corroded, malfunctions, or is more than 6 years old, Chaud Company will suggest you replace it. As you look at the option of upgrading your water heater, you should also consider tankless, & hybrid water heaters. Like any energy efficient, conventional unit, they cost more up front, but the money you save on operating costs will pay for them in a few years (see information, right). If you choose to continue with a tank-type water heater, we will help you understand the difference between low cost models and the latest energy efficient, Energy Star rated equipment. You do have a choice in tank water heaters in Southeastern Idaho. For a few dollars more than the cheap, builders'-grade models, you can get a storage water heater with a heavily insulated tank, significantly reducing standby heat loss and lowering annual operating costs. Look for models with tanks that have a thermal resistance (R-Value) of R-12 to R-25.
